Welcome to our Education Department, with over 40 years of experience and knowledge Genesee County EMS offers educational opportunities like none other. Our Training Center is licensed by Michigan as an EMS Education Site and as a Proprietary school, allowing us to offer courses like the EMT-Basic and Paramedic Programs.

As part of our commitment, we offer Basic and Advanced Life Support training consisting of CPR, First Aid and ACLS. Whether you are a healthcare professional or just wanting to help others we have courses to meet your needs. Genesee County EMS is a Training Center for the American Heart Association, providing comprehensive Emergency Cardiovascular Care and First Aid courses.

In addition, Genesee County EMS also offers Emergency Public Safety Dispatching courses, like the Emergency Medical Dispatch program or the Emergency Telecommunicator Course. These courses are essential for the foundation of Public Safety Dispatching. If you are already certified and would like to advance your knowledge, we also have the Communications Training Officer and the Communications Center Supervisor Courses.

BLS Instructor

Course Description

The BLS Instructor Course is a 1 day program designed to prepare individuals with the ability to disseminate the science, skills, and philosophy of resuscitation programs to participants enrolled in AHA courses. Instructor candidates successfully completing the instructor course will have the knowledge and skills necessary to teach potential students in CPR and First Aid. 

To become an instructor you must meet the following criteria:

  • Certification in BLS for Healthcare Provider
  • Certification in First Aid OR Licensed Emergency Care Provider (i.e. RN, Paramedic, etc)
  • Completion of Instructor Candidate Application

This course is intended for an individual that has a desire or requirement to instruct others. This course does not teach or certify you in provider skills.

Course Length: 8 Hours

BLS for Healthcare Provider

The BLS Healthcare Provider Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a timely, effective manner. 

This course is intended for healthcare or public safety professionals

The Heartsaver CPR/AED Course is designed to provide individuals with the ability to recognize severe life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a timely, effective manner. 

This course is intended for an individual that requires certification for their workplace or personal enrichment. (Not for healthcare professionals)

Course Length: 3 hours

Heartsaver First Aid

Course Description

Course Description

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens

Course Description

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course is designed to meet the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. Participants should bring their Agency's Exposure Control Plan to the course. Some individuals are required to take this course as part of their employer's effort to comply with State and Federal regulations.

This course is intended for any individual required to obtain certification in Bloodborne Pathogens Training.

Course Length: 2 hours

Online: BLS for Healthcare Provider

The American Heart Association’s BLS for Healthcare Providers Online Part 1 Course, web-based and accessible 24 hours a day, provides a flexible alternative to classroom training. Through case-based scenarios, interactive activities and videos, this course teaches the concepts of both single-rescuer and team basic life support.

Part 1 must be paired with a hands-on skills practice and testing session (Parts 2 and 3) with an AHA BLS Instructor. Students who successfully complete Part 1 receive a certificate that allows them entrance to a skills practice and testing session. An AHA BLS for Healthcare Providers course completion card will be issued upon successful completion of all three parts. This course is for healthcare professionals who need to know how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Online Course is a self-directed eLearning course designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction. Like the classroom-based course, it uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and slogan, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training. 

The Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course was designed for anyone with a reasonable chance for occupational exposure in workplace settings such as industry and manufacturing, Fortune 1500 companies, occupational health, property management, hospitality, security, and health and fitness staff. In addition, childcare workers, school personnel, maintenance workers, tattoo artists, and state corrections facilities may be interested in the course due to additional state regulations. 

This course is intended for any individual required to obtain certification in Bloodborne Pathogens Training.

CPR Awareness Course (Friends & Family)

The Family & Friends CPR Course contains information on how to perform the basic skills of CPR in adults, children and infants and how to help if someone is choking.

This course is a CPR Awareness course and is intended for friends, family members or anyone in the community who wants to learn CPR but does not need a certification card. (Not for healthcare professionals)

Emergency Telecommunicator Course

Emergency Telecommunicator Certification Course (ETC) 3rd Edition

The ETC is a basic training course certified by National Academies of Emergency Dispatch (NAED). The ETC course includes the latest course manual and NAED's Code of Ethics. The course combines the knowledge and skill building information needed for a basic telecommunicator, with the most up-to-date information on the technology and issues surrounding today's public safety communications center.

The ETC course may be used for new-hire training and existing employee in-service training. All students successfully passing the final exam receive the NAED ETC certification demonstrating completion of a training course that meets and exceeds industry accepted national basic training standards. Instructional media and exercises used throughout the course reinforce the knowledge attained in lecture and demonstration.

Course Length: 40-Hours Minimum.

Prerequisites: Ability to read and write at a high school graduate or GED Level Attendance at an ETC course taught by an NAED-certified ETC Instructor

Recertification Requirements: Certification is valid for 2-years unless revoked or suspended. Submit vertification of the required 12 hours of CDE during the two-year period, Successfully complete the Academy's online, 50-question recertification exam with a score of at least 80%, and payment of any applicable fees.

Emergency Medical Dispatch

This course is designed for those interested in the field of public safety dispatching.  It is presented by the National Academy of Emergency Medical Dispatch. Topics include medical dispatching, call-taking techniques, EMD certification (provided by Priority Dispatch Corp.) and general communications training. Communications Training Officer (CTO)

Communications Training Officer (CTO)

Emergency Medical Technician Basic

Emergency Medical Technician Basic Course

The Emergency Medical Technician-Basic training program is the introductory course for those wishing to pursue a career in prehospital emergency medicine. This course highlights the basic knowledge and skill necessary for individuals who wish to obtain state or nation certification as an Emergency Medical Technician-Basic. The course adheres to the U.S. Department of Transportation Safety Administration EMT-Basic National Standard and the Michigan Department of Community Health’s curriculum.

Course Length: Minimum 216 classroom hours and minimum of 32 clinical hours as required by MDCH

Tuition and Payment Options: A non-refundable registration fee is included in the course tuition. A monthly payment plan is available with a valid credit card for automatic monthly payments.
